Case Mix Index calculation

Case mix describes the makeup of a group of encounters. In Clinical Analytics, case mix is a way to properly compare differences between client facilities and benchmarks as it takes into account the CMS-assigned weight for each MS-DRG. In general, a higher case mix means more patients with complications/comorbidities or major complications/comorbidities.

The CMS Case Mix Index can be added as a measure in several places throughout Clinical Analytics. Because it is not advisable to average SOI or ROM across APR-DRGs, we recommend using the CMS Case Mix Index value as an indicator of relative patient severity.
